Club Representation

Officially registered Club Sports may use the name of the George Washington University in their organizational title. When using the university's name, clubs speak only for their Club Sport and by no means officially represent the George Washington University Athletic Department.

Membership in any Club Sport is open to all interested students, faculty or staff members of the George Washington University. These individuals must be currently registered or employed with the university. Clubs may place additional criteria for membership eligibility. All additional eligibility requirements must be approved by the Recreational Sports Director. Membership and participation within a Club Sport must be free from discrimination based on race, sex, religion, ethnic group or national origin. Each club constitution must contain this statement. Club membership will be open to all GW students, faculty and staff members.

Each sport club will have at least one designated representative, usually a president, who will attend all Club Sports meetings. If that individual cannot attend a meeting, the individual must notify the Office of Campus Recreation and arrange to send an alternate. Representatives will be expected to attend all club functions and will be considered the liaison between their club and the Office of Campus Recreation.

Club Advisors must submit a letter to the Office of Campus Recreation stating their commitment to the club. Their address and phone number must be on file in the Office of Campus Recreation. The advisor or each Club Sport should assist the club with the following tasks:

  • Approving the club's annual budget;
  • Approval of the club's program;
  • Serving as a source of university information;
  • Assisting and counseling members of the club;
  • Serving as a liaison with outside organizations during extramural competition;
  • Being familiar with the Sport Club Guidebook;
  • Assisting the Recreational Sports Director in monitoring the club's activity;
  • Attending club meetings throughout the year.
